The Mecascape: a uniquely original horological object that’s shaking up the world of watchmaking in 2022

The young Swiss brand CODE41 is causing a tsunami in the hushed world of watchmaking with the invention of an "unidentified horological object": the Mecascape. Once again, CODE41 has caught everyone off-guard by setting the bar very high, far beyond mere innovation, with what is purely and simply the creation of a brand new type of timepiece.

CODE41 challenges the status quo

It’s not every day that you witness the birth of a new form of timepiece. Until now, we knew of wristwatches, pocket watches, clocks and pendulum clocks. And that’s just about all. For decades now, brands have focused their innovation almost exclusively on our wrists, without ever coming up with an unprecedented format or changing their perspective.

This status quo did not, in fact, last for long after the recent arrival on the market of CODE41, the young Swiss brand that’s spent the last 6 years blowing the dust off the hushed world of watchmaking. On December 8 2021, the young team from Lausanne unveiled their design for a new watchmaking object that they’ve been developing in secret for several years: the Mecascape.

The Mecascape cuts loose from the limits of the dial and reimagines time and space

The Mecascape could be described as the missing link between the traditional mechanical watch and the desk clock: a creation that’s bigger than a pocket watch, but much less imposing than a portable clock. The dimensions of the Mecascape – a contraction of Mechanical Landscape, are comparable to those of a compact smartphone (around 106mm x 68mm). Entirely mechanical, the idea of the Mecascape is to stretch the movement and components out on a horizontal plane, rather than piling them up on top of each other, as is traditionally the case with a mechanical watch.

So the Mecascape is a horological landscape that liberates its constituent elements in an unprecedented format, allowing them to be taken apart and spread out to be admired down to the smallest detail. Arranged on a flat surface, wider than a classic case, the components that makes the movement’s heart beat now stand out individually for your viewing pleaasure. Equally suited to a nomadic usage or a more sedentary one, it can just as easily be placed horizontally on a desk or bookcase, or be carried with you when you’re out and about.

This is not a watch. This is not a clock. Nor is it a pocket watch. Even less so an item of jewelry. It is very much a Mecascape.

A project secretly gestated over 12 years

We have to go back to 2009 to understand the genesis of this extraordinary project. Claudio D’Amore, who had not yet founded CODE41, was at the time an independent designer for the biggest watchmaking groups. He then had the idea of developing an object set free from both traditional norms and wrists, but at the time, the means of making it a reality (team, partners, suppliers) were not yet in place. Sadly, the Mecascape stayed on the drawing board.

In 2016, Claudio D’Amore launched his own brand and founded CODE41, with the goal of promoting a new watchmaking model, more creative and participatory. The brand met with immediate success and quickly established itself as the avant-garde of a new generation of Swiss watchmakers. 5 years on, CODE41 finally found itself with the means of making its Mecascape project a reality, doing so in the greatest of secrecy until December 2021.

Available to members of the CODE41 community from 2022

Going against the flow of the rest of the market, CODE41 has not built itself up as a brand in the traditional sense of the term, but rather as a community project. The objective is to bring enthusiasts together around a watchmaking project in order to make it a reality. In almost 6 years, the brand has already convinced more than 500,000 members all around the world to join its community and participate in the development of its products.

CODE41 anticipates a date in autumn 2022 for the opening of pre-orders for the very first Edition of the Mecascape, with an estimated retail price starting from 9 360 $. As with every launch of a new CODE41 product, the first Mecascape series is expected to fly off the shelves within a couple of minutes.
