There's nothing quite like rediscovering
the city you live in, while sitting in a bus
that whisks you past all the familiar sights
in air-conditioned comfort.
That's why the Straits Times has
compiled a list of 5 of Singapore's
most scenic bus routes,
that take you past historical locations
and modern masterpieces!
Let's get it!
(Photos and List adapted from
The Straits Times)
1. Bus 145
(Cultural Heartlands)
Taking Bus 145 from Toa Payoh Interchange
to Buona Vista Terminal brings you
straight through the heart of Singapore's
cultural past, as it drives through Kampong Glam,
Chinatown and Tanjong Pagar (Koreatown)!
Along the route, you can see the
famous Sultan Mosque, opulent
Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and the
Central Fire Station, classified as a
national monument!
Feeling peckish after a long ride?
(It takes about 1.5 hours)
Hop off at Holland Village for some
Tip : Sit on the right side of the bus,
as it offers the best views of the
sights along the route!
2. Bus 975
(Blast To The Past)
If you've always wondered what
the Lim Chu Kang area looks like
(or if you dreaded going there
in the past) it's a good way to relive
the memories of army/school camp days!
Taking 975 from Bukit Panjang Interchange
to Lim Chu Kang road, you will catch a
glimpse of Hai Inn Temple, the picturesque
Buddhist Monastery in Choa Chu Kang!
You will also go by a few historical sites,
such as the Choa Chu Kang cemetery
and the Lim Chu Kang heritage road.
Tip : The route takes 1.5 hours, and it's
advised to do it in the day-time, as you'll
barely be able to see anything in the dark!
3. Bus 117
(Space City)
Taking Bus 117 from Punggol Interchange
to Sembawang Interchange will transport
you to another world - reminiscent of
American cities like Seattle!
The trip takes 1 to 1.5 hours,
and will take you past the hipster enclave
around Seletar Aerospace.
After the ride, consider going down
to Wheeler's Yard to watch the planes
while having a cup of coffee!
4. Bus 518
(Singapore Skyline)
If you'd like to feel like a tourist
for the day - consider taking Bus 518
from Pasir Ris Interchange to Orchard!
Army boys will remember the struggle
of marching from Pulau Tekong to
Marina Bay, and this bus takes exactly
that route into Singapore's iconic sights!
This long 2.5 hour trip takes you through
Tampines and Bedok, and right into
the touristy Marina Bay Sands and
Orchard areas.
Bonus : The bus will also make a circle
around Suntec City's Fountain of Wealth!
5. Bus 980
(At One With Nature)
Last but not least, for the nature lovers
is Bus 980 from Sembawang Interchange
to Lor 1 Geylang Terminal!
Whereas it isn't exactly a 'sit-down'
experience (you'll have to get off to see
the sights closely!), it does whisk you
through the greenery of Singapore!
Explore the famed Sembawang Hot Springs,
as well as the nurseries and plantations
along Bah Soon Pah, a trendy
Instagram-worthy spot for greenthumbs!
The bus goes back into town,
passing by Novena and Bugis before
ending the journey at Geylang,
where you can have a nice meal!
Perhaps you can try these routes
for yourself, and take some precious
alone time from any busy schedule!
Remember to pack a comfortable jacket!
