Produce X 101 Group, ‘X1’ Disbands
After a rocky season of Produce X 101, which was filled with scandals amidst revelations of producers having rigged the show’s results, X1 officially announced their disbandment on the 6th of January 2020.
Fans were suspicious of the Produce 101 (and Idol School) series, and were quick to escalate investigations to the police, who saw this as a case of fraud since viewers were charged ₩100 (about SGD$0.12) per text vote.
After a long investigation by Seoul Metropolitan Police, the producers of the series, Ahn Joon-young and Kim Yong-bum, were arrested. They later revealed that they did indeed manipulate the rankings and results of all four seasons of the show. Trials have since began, under the charges of obstruction of business, fraud, and bribery.
Many Korean netizens have supported the disbandment after the ruckus it’s caused, but it did not stop fans of the group and its members feeling sorry for them after the news broke. Members Kim Woo Seok and Cho Seung Youn have since written heartfelt farewell letters to X1 fans.
