Look Up At The Sky! 

If you’ve been looking up from your phone towards the sky, you might have realised that the moon is especially bright!

Above is a picture I took the other day at dusk.

이번 주 내도록 달이 유난히 밝지 않던가요? 어제는 달이 너무 밝아서 차임스 성당 옆에 있는 달 사진 찍어봤습니다. I

왜 이렇게 밝을까요? 그 이유는 이번 주말이 바로 6월에 뜨는 보름달  '스토리베리 문' 이 뜨는 날이기 때문입니다.

If you're wondering why, that is because the next full moon, called the ‘Strawberry Moon’ will be happening soon!

For Singapore specifically, the moon will turn precisely full on June 6, 3:12am. It will last a few days, however, so keep on the lookout over the weekend!

According to NASA, the moniker ‘Strawberry Moon’ was coined by the Algonquin tribes, who derived the name from the relatively short season for harvesting strawberries in the north-eastern United States. Hence, the appearance of this moon in June would signify the berries being ripe for harvest. 

‘스트로베리문'은 6월 보름달의 이름으로, 먼 옛날 인디언이 딸기 수확철인 6월을 기념해 처음 이름 붙인 것으로 전해집니다.. 소원이 이뤄지거나 연인이 생기는 길조로 유명하지만 과연 딸기처럼 붉을 까요?

싱가포르 기준으로 6월 6일 새벽 3시 12분에 관측이 가능할 꺼라고 합니다.

As a fun side note, an old European name for this full Moon is the Honey Moon. According to NASA, some writings suggest that the time around the end of June was when honey was ripe and ready to be harvested from hives or from the wild, which made this the "sweetest" Moon.

The tradition of calling the first month of marriage the "honeymoon" may be tied to this full Moon, either because of the custom of marrying in June or because the "Honey Moon" is the "sweetest" Moon of the year.

한국을 포함한 지구 동반부에서는 반영월식을 관측할 수 있다고 합니다. 개기일식이나 부분월식보다 훨씬 오묘한 느낌을 주는 어두운 은빛계열의 달일 것이라고 예측하고 있습니다.
