Have a Singapore flag displayed
outside your home to celebrate
National Day?
Remember to keep it by tomorrow,
as after Wednesday (September 30th),
you can be fined up to $1,000 under
Singapore law.
Every year, the flag can be displayed
outside a building or in an open space
without a flagpole between July 1 and Sept 30.
This arrangement was made for the
National Day celebrations in August!
Earlier this year, the timeframe was
brought forward to April 25th, for Singaporeans
to show a sign of unity in the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the end date of this timeframe was
still set on September 30th.
The reason for not allowing year-round
displays is to make sure that the flag
does not suffer from prolonged wear
and tear, which can happen after
periods of neglect.
Update : Minister for Culture, Community and Youth
and Second Minister for Law Edwin Tong
has since taken to Facebook to clarify
that there are no plans to uphold the
specific law.
It seems we can fly our flags proudly
after all!
