We all got some money from the government to help ease the financial burder from the COVID-19 situation, but what did you spend it on? Today, we can see how Koreans are spending their relief checks!
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety Data Team analyzed the use of credit and debit cards from 8 companies (KB Kookmin, NongHyup, Lotte, BC, Samsung, Shinhan, Hana and Hyundai) for funds given by the government for emergency relief, from May 11th to May 31st!
They found that the emergency disaster relief funds for citizens, provided by the government to combat the impact of COVID-19 pandemic, were mainly used for dining out and shopping. Data also showed that sales for opticians, hospitals and pharmacies grew the most last month!
They found that as a whole, the total amount of relief funds used by credit/debit card-holders was 5.6 trillion won ($4.7 billion), which showed that the cash payouts are doing their intended jobs of stimulating spending, and as a whole, the economy.
