Hwang In-beom scored the only goal in a close 1-0 win against long time rivals, Japan. In the finals of the East Asian Football Federation E-1 Championship, South Korea and Japan battled for control of the game until Hwang scored a midrange screamer at the 28th minute. Busan roared with joy as hosts South Korea took the victory and the title with a 3-0 record. 

This match was an important factor to determine who would fare better in next year's 2020 Tokyo Olympics. As the two heads of East Asian football, both teams will be looking to secure a medal placement in the Olympics.

Korean players work particularly hard for medal placements in the Olympics, as earning a medal placement in the Olympics will grant them exemption from conscripted military service.

The win in the EAFF Championships lifted South Korea's international record against Japan up to an impressive 40 wins and 13 losses, with 23 draws.
