On June 7th, BTS and Big Hit Entertainment made a $1 million donation to 'Black Lives Matter', in solidarity with the social justice movement, and ARMY (BTS' fans) managed to raise another $1 million to the cause!
After the donation (which was actually processed late, hence the late announcement), the group stated on Twitter that they are against racism and violence with the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter. The hashtag then went viral among the group’s fans, which started another wave of donations with the hashtag #MatchAMillion. The campaign raised $1,007,518 as of Monday, 8th June at 12:47am.
The pledge comes at the end of a week that has seen many musicians and others call upon the music industry demonstrate support for the black community, which included the K-Pop scene.
Notable donations were Los Angeles-native Mark of GOT7 pledging $7,000 to the George Floyd Memorial fund, Korean-American rapper pH-1 (whose songs we featured here) donating $3,000 to Black Lives Matter, and a $21,000 contribution by Jay Park and his label, H1GHR Music.
We stand with the music industry against racial discrimination - and are heartened by the efforts of both artistes and fans alike!
