We have reached the end of the year, and the end of a decade! Happy new year to all of our supporters, 2019 has been an explosive year for KORdotSIN and we cannot thank you enough!
To wrap up the year, we took a look at the top google searches in Korea and Singapore to compare the results. There were a few surprising entries in both lists. Here is a translation of the Korean searches:
Korea Top 1. Thanos 2. Jung Joon Young 3. Sulli 4. SKY Castle 5. Hangul Day |
People 1. Jung Joon Young 2. Sulli 3. Hwang Ha Na 4. Go You Jung 5. Cho Kuk |
Korean News 1. Hangul Day 2. AFC Asian Cup 3. Burning Sun 4. Sulli Death 5. Typhoon Ling Ling |
Movies 1. Joker 2. Extreme Job 3. Parasite 4. Avengers: Endgame 5. Captain Marvel |
TV 1. SKY Castle 2. Hotel Del Luna 3. Extraordinary You 4. When the Camellia Blooms 5. New Journey to the West |
Games 1. Lost Ark 2. Path of Exile 3. Brawl Stars 4. Fifa Online 4 5. Auto Chess |
Unsurprisingly, celebrity scandals were huge in Korea during 2019. The Burning Sun saga, and Sulli's untimely passing, both left Korea in shock. Korea was really feeling the post Endgame blues, as Thanos shot up to the number one most searched term in 2019.
When it comes to the silver screen, Korean support of their domestic market is to be expected. Joker is quite a standout movie if it can beat the hottest domestic movie of the year, Extreme Job! Love for the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a global phenomenon and Korea is no exception.
Korean dramas and entertainment reign absolutely supreme. The entire top 5 are all Korean dramas, with New Journey to the West being the only variety program. Korean media is becoming a global sensation, but at the core they are still being made for the giant Korean market.
Now let's take a look at the Singapore list and compare! (Singapore's list included a few more categories but we won't be including those)
Singapore also loves their Marvel movies! Avengers: Endgame and Captain Marvel beat out Joker in Singapore. Disney reigns supreme in Singapore, as Aladdin and its soundtrack took over the island nation during its release.
When we look at TV shows, the controversial ending to Game of Thrones reigns supreme. Numbers two to four, unsurprisingly, are Korean Dramas! If you live in Singapore you definitely know how popular K-Drama has become across all ages.
Local news had its fair share of scandals as well this year, including the countless NUS peeping scandals sparked off by Monica Baey, opening of Jewel Changi Airport, and of course the exceptionally bad haze season this year.
As we wrap up the year, it's interesting to see what similarities Korea and Singapore share. It makes the differences even more fascinating, as the two cultures are still far apart from each other.
